The famous Bolshoi Theatre on Fontanka river was founded in the first years of Soviet republic as a new stage for drama, opera and ballet. The first performance took place on February, 15, 1919. The historic interiors of the theatre have been renovated by 2015. This theateris one of the best known theatres in Russia, local stars like Oleg Basilashvili and Alisa Freindlich are known as top soviet actors. Theatre has a name of it’s director George Tovstonogov, another biggest star of Soviet time.

Right in the city center

Bolshoy drama theatre is just 5-10 minutes of walking by the river bank  from Nevskiy prospect so it’s location is perfect. By the way, there is an ugly building right near it, one of 3 or 4 scary soviet buildings in the city centre.

Tickets available online

You can get tickets online thanks to the Internet. They are quite expensive, but it is nearly impossible to buy them at cheaper price online without knowing Russian and paying in rubles.

Dress code

There is no definite dress-code here, but please remember noone wears T-shirts in theatres. Wear some more or less formal clothes please.
