‘The Nutcracker’ is a famous ballet by Pyotr Chaikovsky. It’s scenario is based on  Ernst Theodor Amadeus Hoffmann’s story “The Nutcracker and the Mouse King”. The show has an incredible popularity since 1960s, after it was played in New York city. This ballet is known to be a christmas story  so it is usually played in November or December. Of course such a famous ballet is staged in the most popular theatres of the city: Mikhailovsky and Mariinsky (both on old and new stage). If you have kids and plan to visit Russia in winter – be sure to see this show.

The most Christmas ballet ever

As you know, ‘The Nutcracker’ is a Cristmas story full of mistery and miracles. Kids fight the misterious Rat King with the help of toy soldiers and the Nutcracker. The most classic version of this ballet is in Mariinsky theatre: it first was premiered on 18 February 1934 and has not been changed up to date. Unfortunately there is no older version of this show as it was first played in the same theatre in 1892.
