A totally marvellous cathedral with a sad story. Russian emperor Alexander II was assassinated here by group of terrorists in 1881. The church was built on this place afterwards. It is definitely the most bright and unusual church in the city. It’s style resembles the St. Basil’s Cathedral in Moscow. By the way, it is Top-1 thing to do in St. Petersburg according to Tripadvisor.

Marvellous interiors

Interiors were decorated by top artists of the end of XIX century: Viktor Vasnetsov, Mikhail Nesterov and Mikhail Vrubel. They are probably in Top-10 of Russian artists who ever lived.

Beautiful exterior

The most unusual and bright building in the city center. You should at least pass by, you’ll never regret that!

A terrible story behind it

Russian emperor Alexander II was assassinated here. Terrorists bombed his bulletproof cart in a crowd, he went out to help the wounded people and was injured by another bomber. He lost both legs, his stomach was ripped open so he died in several hours. The church was built in memory of this emperor who emancipated the servs (thus ending the slavery-like feodalism in Russia).
