Saint Petersburg is known as a ‘cultural capital’ of Russia. This is the reason why we have dozens of theatres here. Russians love theatres a lot: if you only knew Russian you’d enjoy that! But unfortunately all plays are only in Russian. So what you can watch is opera and ballet. This is a selection of top ballet and opera theatres. All of them are known worldwide. So welcome!     Mariinsky theatre

    The State Academic Mariinsky (ex. Kirov) Ballet and Opera Theatre is known worldwide as the main theatre of Saint Petersburg and probably even of Russia. World’s most famous actors, ballet dancers and opera singers performed here. For over a 100 years of history this theatre grew up famous artists like Feodor Chaliapin and Mikhail Baryshnikov. Mariinsky theatre’s conductor is Valery Gergiev, a famous musician, main director of the London Symphonic orchestra. Now Mariinskiy theatre has 2 buildings (the new building is known as “new stage” or “second stage” or even Mariinskiy II).

    Alexandrinsky theatre

    This is one of the oldest national theatres in Russia, it exists from 1756. Nowadays it survived a recoinstruction and is now open. The most famous of it’s shows is, however, a Swan Lake ballet. Other famous ballets here are “Macbeth” and “Snow White”. The building itself is beatiful and location is perfect (3 minutes from Nevskiy prospect). The surrounding area is also marvelous so plan your route to pass by this theatre and Rossi street.

    Mikhailovsky Opera and Ballet Theater

    This is one of the most important and oldest theatres in Saint Petersburg together with The Mariinsky and The Alexandrinsky theatres. Mikhailovsky is located in the city center at the Art square several steps from Russian museum and Etnography museum. The theatre was popular before Soviet taimes and was working during the soviet period as Mussorgsky theatre. In 2001 the historical name was returned and now it is considered one of the noblest and popular theatres of opera and ballet in Saint Petersburg.

    Tovstonogov Bolshoy Drama Theater

    The famous Bolshoi Theatre on Fontanka river was founded in the first years of Soviet republic as a new stage for drama, opera and ballet. The first performance took place on February, 15, 1919. The historic interiors of the theatre have been renovated by 2015. This theateris one of the best known theatres in Russia, local stars like Oleg Basilashvili and Alisa Freindlich are known as top soviet actors. Theatre has a name of it’s director George Tovstonogov, another biggest star of Soviet time.

    Theater of The Musical Comedy

    This theatre was founded in 1929 and become extremely popular very soon after. It became so famous because of great operettas that were on here. The theatre survived the Siege of Leningrad in the Second World War. During 900 days of the Siege the theatre was working and they were playing operettas for starving citizens. The building was damaged by the bomb but it was restored later. Theatre looks quite modest outside but inside it is marvellous!
