Church of the Savior on Blood
$4Church of the Savior on Blood
A totally marvellous cathedral with a sad story. Russian emperor Alexander II was assassinated here by group of terrorists in 1881. The church was built on this place afterwards. It is definitely the most bright and unusual church in the city. It’s style resembles the St. Basil’s Cathedral in Moscow. By the way, it is Top-1 thing to do in St. Petersburg according to Tripadvisor.

The famous fountain park is a real miracle. It is a great complex of palaces and gardens full of fountains. The complex was designed by city’s founder king Peter the Great as a summer residence and an entertainment park for the high society. This is a true miracle of architecture, just take a look at the pictures. Isn’t it a must-see?

Museum usually has several extra expositions available with an extra ticket bought at the place. Unfortunately they don’t sell tickets online.

St. Isaac’s cathedral
$4St. Isaac’s cathedral
St. Isaac’s cathedral is enormously big for such an old building. And, of course, beautiful. It is the largest orthodox basilica and the fourth largest (by the volume under the cupola) cathedral in the world. Marvellous interiors are a must-see. If you are fit enough, you can climb endless ladders to the roof and enjoy the St. Petersburg panotramic view from the highest spot in the city centre.

Kazan Cathedral
$0Kazan Cathedral
Kazan Cathedral is a beatiful and large building you will definitely see when walking down the Nevskiy prospect. Exterior is sure a thing to see, interiors are marvellous as well! The entrance is free so you are welcome in. Inside you will find not only icons, but some military trophies as well. A Russian commander Kutuzov is buried here (this is the guy who defeated Napoleon in 1812).

Faberge museum
$9Faberge museum
A new private museum (est. 2013) containing the impressive collection of jewelery made by Karl Gustav Faberge company in the end of XIX – beginning of the XX centuries. 9 of the famous Faberge eggs are here. And about 4000 other jewelery items, not only those eggs. The collection is really impressive, this is one of the museums locals don’t know very much as it is new. It is located in Shuvalov’s palace so it is definitely worth visiting even if you hate jewellery: interiors are shockingly rich and glamorous.

Erarta museum of contemporary art
$7Erarta museum of contemporary art
Ererta is a new museum (established in 2010) – and one of the most interesting ones as we think! Contemporary art never leaves you uninterested: you love it or hate it. The collection is so big here you won’t be disappointed, usually it’s 2 or 3 hours people spend here wandering from one exposition to another. Erarta also hosts some shows, film shows, exhibitions and other interesting events (however shows and films are mostly on weekends). By the way, if you gather into a big group – they will assign you a guide for free. The only trouble is location: this place is rather far from city center on Vasilievsky island so you have to get a taxi or go by public transport (both by metro and a bus most probably).

Yusupov palace
$10Yusupov palace
A beautiful palace of the Yusupov noble family. An amazing place of gold, marble and velvet. If you want to see how rich noble families were – you are welcome. It is incredibly beatiful both inside and outside. This palace has a terrible story behind it: Rasputin was killed here. Welcome here to see all the mistery beyond this murder! This is another must-see place of our city.

Tsarskoe selo & Catherine’s palace
$2Tsarskoe selo & Catherine’s palace
A great ensemble of a park and a palace in Tsarskoe selo (this means ‘royal village’ in Russian). This small city is located 20 km from St Petersburg and is full of parks and museums. Caterine’s park and Catherine’s palace are a true masterpiece of barroque! It is all covered in gold and marble, looking incredibly posh and bright. And it is surrounded by a marvellous park. The best time for a visit is the end of September, when the park is all in yellow, and the end of May, when everything blooms, but summer time is also great. If you have a lot of free time in St. Petersburg – go there and see it, this small trip will take a day but it’s worth it. If you are short of time – go to Peterhof.

Military Historical Artillery Museum
$7Military Historical Artillery Museum
A whole building and a big courtyard packed with weapons of all times, from sabers to nuclear warheads. If you love military gear you must come here. Lots of tanks, cannons, missiles, machineguns, knives, sabers, medals, etc. A history of russian weapons from medieval times to nowadays completely explained here. The exposition of AK-47 creation history is also here. Well, this is probably one of the most interesting museums in town we say. By the way, it faces Peter and Paul’s fortress so it is nice to visit those 2 places at one day!
